On, in y at pueden traducirse en. Entonces, ¿cuándo usamos cada una de estas palabras en inglés? Porque sí las usamos con diferente sentido.

On por lo general significa sobre o encima.

In generalmente es adentro.

At nos dice en que lugar, pero es más general. No nos dice si es dentro o fuera.

En algunos casos se puede usar in o at y los dos son correctos.

The keys are on the table. - Las llaves están sobre la mesa.

The mail is still in the mailbox. - El correo (las cartas) está todavía en (dentro de) el buzón.

The kids are at school, Dad is at work and Mom is at home.

Los niños están en la escuela, Papá está en el trabajo y Mamá está en casa.

at the beach - en la playa

in the mountains - en las montañas

on vacation - de vacaciones

in the yard - en el patio

in the park or at the park - en el parque

at school pero también decimos a veces in school

at the office - en la oficina pero también podemos decir

in the office - dentro de la oficina

Decimos: sit on a chair - sentarse en una silla

Pero si la silla es un sillón (armchair) y tiene sostén para los brazos, decimos: sit in an armchair or sit in a chair.

When a chair has a place for the arms to rest, we say: sit in the chair.
